At least 160 persons out of the 168 passengers aboard a giant sized boat, last Friday, lost their lives when it sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Cross River State.
The passengers it was learnt were travelling in a wooden boat, the MV SONNY, from Oron in Akwa Ibom State to Gabon, when the boat capsized at the Malabo (Equatorial Guinea) waterways. Sources told the National Emergency Management Agency that the victims were mostly Igbo traders heading for Gabon and preferred to use the cheap means of water transport. As at press time, two persons were said to be rescued alive, while nine bodies were recovered.
